17 Year Old Boy wanting to be a nurse. Help?

Hello everyone I'm Greg. I was kind of optimistic in doing this but oh well. I'm and average black young teenager that lives in Florida. I really struggled in school my freshman and sophomore year now im a Junior and had a messed up attitude forwards school I used to skip and sleep threw classes like nothing. Now im a junior regretting everything and all the slacking i have done. I have a cumulative GPA of 1.7 .... yes i know horrible....... . But im trying my hardest to get my grades higher. im currently taking 4 classes over and im doing pretty good in those classes but im still kind of lazy. But it finally kicked me.. im going to graduate soon and im going to have to work and not be supported by my parents. My mother is a CNA and she has instilled in my brain that the Medical field is the way to go because the jobs come in abundance. So i have made my decision and i want to be a Rn and maybe a Director of Nursing in the future, but the problem is I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ON WHAT CLASSES AND THINGS TO DO , IM TOTALLY LOST! I really want to get into the FAMU nursing program but ive been researching and ive seen that you have to take prerequisites before you even try to get into the program. Can somebody tell me what classes i need to take to get into a nursing program im very lost. Please help me im very lost and dont know how to fulfill my dream in being a nurse.
Ok young man. Fisrt things first, your doing well getting your GPA up, unfortunately your early issues won't allow you to take AP classes. You will take your SATs and other standardized tests. Then apply to the collage where the nursing program you want to attend resides. You'll be a general studies major until you get the required prerequisites. Once they are done you can apply for the nursing program. Your high school career will have very little impact at this point, as the nursing program will be looking at your grades from the prerequsitates. Doing well on your prerequisites is very improtant as the nursing program only wants students who they are confident can handle the academic requirements, in addition to the clinicals you'll be doing. Just stay the course. Oh and a word to the wise if anyone offers you a DON Ajob before your 35 that probably a place you don't want to work.

You should take algebra I and chemistry if you can qualify while you are still in high school. If your academic situation can not be brought up as high as necessary to get you started on the right track in community college, you might want to consider starting with LPN school. Once you have an LPN license, you may find it easier to continue with an RN program. At any rate, have a talk with an academic advisor, both at your high school and at the colleges that you are considering. Best wishes. Oh, and check out our extensive student forums on the site. And
Hey Greg! Time for a little Heart to Heart from someone in your shoes. Well close. I also live in South FLorida, I am 18 years old, ill be 19 in a number of days. Also with the hopes of pursuing Nursing. I start Broward College in Jan. And I have a tough schedule ahead of me.My advice man, is to get those grades up. There is no use feeling bad for yourself, accept mistakes and move on. Learn from them!And never let anyone tell you, you cant do it. Try your hardest, study your best and dream of success. Your still young, we youngins will shape the world and our future! We have time on our side so we have to make the best of it. No one said it will be easy, everything worthwhile requires work. And with some, it may require more work than others. I wish you the best!

You need to get better grades in your pre reqs. Nursing is not easy to begin with. BSN-RN here. I wrote my own thesis and case studies. Was bloody but worth it. NClex is a challenge. Getting a job is a harder than ever. You need to be dedicated and let time to study and focus. You need a solid theoritical background to be good in your practicals. Make sure you know whys and hows. And finally when youre a nurse, please dont be lazy and dont just do it for money,your patients lives are at stake!For now study hard, good grades in prereqs and better grades in nursing school.
