advice needed for current boss

I have my dream job minus the hours that I have to work! I have been working L & D for 2 years now and do love what I do along with everyone I work with..........but the hours (night shift) are killing me and my family. I have 3 children, all in school and my husband works regular hours from our home office. I have decided to apply for positions within the company I work for that would get me to day hours.......home health care is where I am first going to apply, because it does interest me-but then I can have the same hours (or close to it) that my family has! So for the advice, should I tell this to my current boss or could I compromise myself? I rarely see them since I work nights, so I do not really have any sort of relationship with them.......they should not be 100% surprised since I did put in a request for day shift a month or so ago-I just do not see it happening anytime soon! I do not want to burn bridges in any way, and have NO issues with the area I work in.........I just need to put myself (lack of sleep) and my family first!!
Tell your manager what you have said here (with the exception of being on nights and not having much of a relationship with him/her). This way, if you get a transfer, you can leave with grace and not burn bridges---and maybe a solution can be found to change your hours so you can stay in a job you otherwise love.

I would wait until you have another job offer before you talk to your current boss. You can always ask the person you interviewed with to wait to contact your current boss until you speak with them yourself first.

You should follow up regarding your transfer. I don't know if you're going to do home health for your hospital or through an agency...but personally I wouldn't tell my boss about anything I was applying for. When you get the job, give him a two weeks notice...done.

I will be leaving my job within the next month for similar reasons and going to a school nurse position. I sat down privately with my boss and explained my reason. I told her I really love my job but night shift is wreaking havoc on my health and my sleep, and that I was looking for a new job. She appreciated the heads up and there hasn't been any kind of retaliation.
