Need Help Coming up with an Excuse!!

I just started this nursing job 2 weeks ago at a doctor's office(still in training, not on the schedule until this friday). I'm a new RN.... I applied to this other job before I started here, and it's a MUCH better job. I wrote a post about it a couple weeks ago I think. Anyway... they finally called me and want me to come in tomorrow to look at the facility (endoscopy center) and talk about a position there. VERY good chance I'll get hired.

Well, I take an hour for lunch, and it'll take me 15 minutes to get there from my job and of course 15 mins back. And I'm guessing I'll be there for around 30 mins. Well, I need another 30 minutes to pump and stop by the house to store my milk. So I need to ask for an additional 30 minutes for lunch tomorrow, but I don't know what to say.

I want to tell my supervisor I need the extra minutes tomorrow... but what excuse/reason should I give? I also have a daughter who is in first grade.. and I thought I could say something about having to go to her school? I don't know. And I obviously can't say I'm going to another job to interview. I feel really bad about possibly leaving this job.. but I just can't pass up this awesome opportunity.

***** I forget to mention that I always go home to pump... so I never bring my pump to work ********* Last edit by Sl1011 on Sep 27, '10
I think your reason is a very legitimate reason....I don't see why you would need to lie (unless you feel it's too intimate to tell them). You can tell them that you left your lactation pump at home and you are feeling really uncomfortable, so you need to stop home (As medical professionals, they should be understanding). OR can you pack your lunch tonight and save time and eat on the way home? *I know it's a bit unsafe to drive and eat, but sandwiches and finger sides are things that can be held* But if you just don't feel comfortable telling them something like that, I guess you can call them like 10 minutes after your break and tell them that something came up at your child at school and you HAVE to pick her up. Hope this helps!

I never was very good at excuses. I even have a bad time just telling the truth. Sorry can't help you with this one unless you suddenly get a 24 hour virus while on your lunch break and need some time for the imodium to kick in.

I don't think lying is ever a good plan.Tell you boss that you have a personal appointment. Without revealing too much, you are telling the truth.

Lying always has a way of returning and kicking in the ass

Quote from Sl1011I like this. Thanks! I think I'll just say I made a last minute appt that I can't reschedule, and I need the extra 30 minutes to go home to pump ( which is why I need the extra 30 minutes ). That way I'm not lying... I hate lying! And like another person posted, I would want this coming back to get me.

Quote from One2gofstYes, you clearly hate lyingYou do realize that now you are still lying about your "last minute appt that you can't reschedule," right?

I think it's in bad form to interview for another job while you're on the clock. The responsible thing to do would be to reschedule.

Quote from Sl1011How is it lying? It is an appt.. it was made last minute (tonight), and I can't really reschedule it b/c they are needing someone asap and want me to come in tomorrow. I'm not telling them all the details (which I guess is withholding info), but it's certainly not lying.

Quote from One2gofstWhatever you need to tell yourself. If you don't think you are lying, I am not going to convince you.My first line addresses that I feel someone who would title a thread "Need help Coming Up With An Excuse," will have a hard time convincing me that she "hates lying." Thats all. I really do not care what you do, but saying things just to make yourself feel better is a little disingenuous.
