Giving Up?

Has anyone ever considered giving up nursing altogether? I've recently thought about doing something else that I've always wanted to do,but its COMPLETELY opposite of nursing. I definetely won't make the same amount of money, but I don't think my heart is in this anymore. Advice!!

LoveANurse09:OHY! Twice! In '95 and '03. I gave up Nursing in order to work as a Feee-Lance Artist. I did pretty good at it, too. My decisions to return to Nursing were based more on security than A Calling. However, I do love Nursing. And I'm glad I took those breaks. My whole first year of nursing I wanted to do something else, anything else. Then one day something changed and suddenly it wasn't so bad. I still don't see myself doing floor nursing for my whole career but I no longer have the urge to stop in at wallmart and submit my application.

You've only been a nurse for about a year? Can I ask why you went through the rigors of nursing school if there was something else you always wanted to do? Why didn't you take that route in the first place? I'm genuinely curious, I'm not trying to be snotty at all so please don't take offense. I think your thought process may be helpful for others entering the field of nursing.

Yes, I thought about opening my own business this spring. It is a supplier for private contractors (completely different from nursing). It stems off of what my significant other does for a living. Since I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket if the relationship or business doesn't work.. I'm always going to keep some sort of per diem or part-time gig in nursing. Wouldn't hurt to do it one day a week to keep your options open no matter what you decide to do. Great for preventing burn out too.

Wow, my friend and i joke all the time about this! We both LOVE Target so we decided when we couldnt stand nursing anymore we would get jobs there! No the same income but less stress !
