first admission all the timeRating: (votes: 0) Why don't you find out of there is a legitimate reason? Comment:
if you don't speak up who will advocate for you?
Comment:
I'd ask if there was a way to maybe rotate who does what
Comment:
I used to work at a psych hospital as one of two RNs on shift. One of us would be charge, the other would take the first admit. We would rotate, but I personally preferred the first admit. Not sure if its a similar situation, but talk to the other nurse.

talk about itAnother solution is to reframe your thinking - better to get 1st admit than the one that is right before shift change, IMHO

i work on a busy med-surg floor. On med surg floor the first 3-4 hours is very busy and to top it off with admit all the time i work is just annoying. There is really no legitimate reason other than this people don't want to do admit during med pass and pt's care. I appreciate all the answers on this issue.

I guess if you calmly ask the charge nurse if you guys can rotate who is first admit you might get somewhere. How many nurses does she have to choose from? I don't know anyone who likes doing admits (they always seem to come up to the unit in the middle of a med pass or an hour before shift change), but it isn't fair to always have the same person be up first if there are a couple more nurses on the roster.

If you truly feel like a victim stand up for yourself. Have facts in hand though. Keep score on the days you work, the admits, who has them, who's first. Then approach whoever is in charge when you're faced with the first admit. It's hard to argue with facts.

I've worked med/surg also. I know how busy it is - but the point is you need to talk to her. Or her supervisor.
Comment:
i would rather have the first admit and get it done early than have one later in the shift. it gives me more time to make sure i did not miss anything.
Comment:
I agree that you should talk to her. Also, are you able to be charge nurse? I'd ask to be allowed to be charge nurse sometimes. When you also have charge power, suddenly your assignments get a lot more reasonable.
