I love management!!.....not

6 Found out yesterday that my dad has stage 3 oral cancer. Will have to have surgery in the next 2 weeks with chemo and radiation for 3 months. Will have to have a feeding tube for supplemental nutrition with any treatment and is refusing the tube completely so he wants no treatment and let it ride. He is healthy person for the most part, active and is a school teacher. So i am NOT taking this very well, i am a daddy's girl, very close . But i am also a nurse and 100% respect his wishes. Call HR to get FMLA, notified my manager and guess what she said....... 'dont mess with my scheduling. we are already short staffed.' ummm....duh!!! why do u think i work some weekends and overtime since february!!! wasn't looking for a pity party! I came in the night my mom had a massive heart attack and i didnt complain!!! just venting....but when i get approved for FMLA here in the next few days, no one can say/do anything to me. my job is secure for now
And that, my friends, is why they are short staffed. Hospitals do it to themselves.

Be careful though, with FMLA- your job as a nurse at the hospital is protected, not neccessarily in your same unit... course if they are short-staffed, shouldn't be a problemI've been lucky with management, as I've had really good ones so far. I'll come back to this thread to vent sometime I'm sure...

That's horrible! As one Daddy's girl to another I can't imagine how hard it would be to hear that news.. Nice manager for trying to make it easier on a hard working staff member who needs time off for a good reason! Shame on her! That reminds me of when I was recently informed when my grandmother died that I didn't need to take any of my bereavement time since I work midnights and services are during the day. Unbelievable!

wow-have I ever recieved an education. I had no idea mgmt could be so nasty when it is obvious you need time off starting NOW! Good luck to you, and I'm sorry for you and your dad. You love him very much and it shows.

I'm very sorry to hear about your father. Sometimes, circumstances in our lives take precedence over everything else. This sounds like one of them. More often than not, we regret the things we don't do vs the things we do.Get your FMLA paper work completed, go be with your father and let the chips fall where they may.

Your family needs you now that's your priority no matter what.... shame on anyone who doesn't get that.

Good thoughts for your dad.((Hugs)))

Your boss is a jerk. No wonder she can't keep staff. And anyone here who thinks you are winning points by picking up shifts - you're not. It's a business. They don't care. They don't care if you neglect your family, if you miss yet another Christmas, if your husband is ready to divorce you because you're so crabby from work abuse - they don't care. Family comes first. Take care of your dad and don't spend another second worrying about work.

May the fleas of a thousand camels infest your NMs armpits...... Just not ok on any planet. Use up all of your available FMLA... and AFTER that, don't feel bad if you "forget" to tell them later that you found another job

Comment:
wow, I thought nurses were supposed to be caring. take care of your daddy and then when you're ready, go look for another job.

Sounds almost as bad as a hospital I used to work for. A nurse had a miscarriage on her weekend to work and she was told she had to make the weekend up. I think it was about this time when I started becoming fed up with nursing and how it's own was treated. Very sad.
