Looking professional all day long . . .

2 Hello Nurses, nursing students, pre-nurses, and everyone else,

I am having problems with my hair recently. It looks fine when I leave, but by the end of the day, it looks like I went through a tornado. Okay not literally, but it is pretty bad. I was wondering if you have any problems controlling your hair? What do you do to keep it professional looking all day? Do you spend hours on it before work? I am always fond of the tried and true pony tail.

This is a pretty silly thread, but I find we need a horse of a different color lol.
What kind of hair do you have? Is it curly, straight, wavy...? What products do you use?I have slightly wavy hair, but I flat iron it smooth and, generally, it stays that way for a whole shift. Takes about 30 minutes from wash to finish.

I have wavy-straight hair. I don't use products because I will be honest, I am not sure how to use them. Gel, always seems stiff and slimy, hairspray seems crunchy, mousse was good for the all day wet look. Other than that, my knowledge is minimal haha. Mostly I blowdry and pony-tail. I find my hair gets oily quickly, and tends to look greasy by the end of the day. I have tried many different shampoos, but have not found a good one yet.

Before I cut my hair above my shoulders, I would always wear my hair in a ponytail. My problem was the little flyaways or stragglers around my face. After a rough day it looked like I stuck my fingers in a light socket. I now have a wonderful assortment of headbands that I use that completely solved the problem. Now, when I don't wear my headband I get strange looks and people saying "something looks different!"

I use Bed Head products. I never use gel or mousse because they end up feeling gross on my scalp. I usually use just a small amount of smoothing cream and a tiny drop of shine serum.

I can completely relate, the little flyaways are a problem. My hair is currently mid back and very layered. Those pesky hairs.

I have shoulder length hair and like to wear it up in a bun with spin pins and a silk flower on the side. I have very straight hair. A touch of hairspray and I am good all day. Plus people really like the flower pin, though it might be too girly for some.They are really easy to use and hold lots of different hair types.

Haha, love this post.. My hair is the most unprofessional but my co- workers and my pts love it.. My hair is short in the back and long in the front. It looks great going out etc but not nurse friendly. My head is shaped funny so headbands don't stay on nor do the clothe ones.. So my fix is sunglasses on top of my head, it keeps the hair back all shift with no problems

It's OK that you belong to those of us who are not hair-talented. My daughter and I both have long hair and hate headbands. For me, the Topsy-Tail is awesome. . .because pulling the hair through keeps the ponytail down against the head, it seems to stay in better. Although both of us hate headbands, my daughter recently received one as part of a softball team that she just loves (and believe me, we have tried them all). They are not too expensive, and are hand made by a nice little startup company: http://www.myglitterbandz.com/ They come in a variety of colors, and the glitter is in the fabric, so they go through the washer just fine. (Some glitter headbands are sequined. . .those don't live as long.)Lastly. . .Aussie brand "Sprunch" spray works well on flyaways.Good luck!

I've had good luck with 'touchable' or 'flexible hold' or 'soft and strong' hairsprays--Pantene has a nice one and I'm sure other brands have similar things. Wash, towel dry, comb, ponytail, light spray all around, et voila! A smooth, non-crunchy, non-sticky hairstyle with small likelihood of flyaways. It's especially helpful in winter--putting on and taking off a hat, hood, scarf, etc. really does a number on a hairstyle.
