What do you love most about your floor/specialty?Rating: (votes: 8) Thanks! Laura I work in psych. It's never boring, it's more challenging than one realizes (more so mentally than physically, though we have that too) and you can't make up most of the stuff that you will see. And those are pretty much the main reasons I went into nursing in the first place. Comment:
Quote from LauraLizI am in my last semester of school and was wondering what you love most about the area of nursing you work in? If you can't stand where are you working then where do you want to work? Thanks!Laura

I work in psych and I absolutely love it. I loved it in clinicals and am now working at the facility I did clinicals at. There's never a dull moment and each patient is different. To me it's fun and rewarding to figure out exactly how to deal with them and their illness.

I work MedSurg and while I couldn't do it forever...I love that I use my skills! I also see all sort of diagnoses and have patients with a variety of medical histories. But those skills? They do NOT go to waste!

What kind of setting do you guys work in, in psych?

I love my patients (pediatrics). I also love working with them in THEIR environment.

I love my coworkers. The patient population isn't bad (surgery) but I would like to be in pediatrics.

I've had the privilege of gaining experience in many different settings, but right now I am working in a wound healing clinic as a Hyperbaric Safety Director/Wound Nurse. I like the hours (7:30am-4:00pm Monday-Friday) and have great benefits (401k, medical, dental, vision and 19 PTO days per year) I get along with my co-workers well and most of the time there is teamwork.I like the concept of hyperbaric therapy and have seen first hand how beneficial it can be for wound healing. Only downside is it can get boring sitting for hours at a time because I absolutely cannot leave the room when a patient is in a chamber. Treatments take 2 hours and right now we have 4 patients in hyperbarics, so that's 4 hours of sitting. We have two chambers so two patients are treated at the same time.I don't like that most of the time nobody will relieve me for a lunch break, yet I am reprimanded for not having time to take lunch. All other staff take their breaks.Overtime is strictly prohibited, so if I don't get a lunch break I have to clock out 30 mins. early and go home. If things are slow in the clinic and there is nothing to do we are sent home. I have only gotten one full 80 hour check in the 3 months I have been there. I average about 72-74 hours per pay period.

I love ED there's a sense of family, and just a awesome place to work

I love that my hospital is smallish, and that I know most of the nursing staff in most departments, 95% of the physicians, and a good portion of the support staff by name. We aren't tiny, but just small enough that there's a community feel to my hospital that I would miss working in a larger center.

I love my cardio wing....we get patients with heart failiure, post cardiac arrest nstemi, stemi, pts with chest pains under investigation, pre-op for heart surgery... We also get the occasionnal ortho surgery cases and internal med like new diabetes, or gastro prob or general surgery... I like to think of or floor as the cardio + waste/landfill of the hospital... When they dot have any more cardio patients for us and we have beds availlable they fill us up with whatever ... So i get to see more than just cardio

I enjoy the ED. Fast pace, variety of pts, and if someone gets on my nerves, they're gone in a few hours The only thing I really hate is slow doctors that cause us to have pts with wait times of 5+ hours. I get hollered at for their long wait, when I had them assessed, an IV in place, and all their blood sent off to the lab within 20 minutes of them being placed in a room. Not to mention the fact that I do hourly rounds on everyone to check on them/update them on what's going on. Yet I'm the one that gets the verbal abuse, not fun.
