What are grand rounds? I was reading an on my hospital's website about grand rounds being held and that anyone was welcome. What are grandrounds?

Thanks
There's the kind where the attendings go around to see their patients with their entourage of residents and interns.

That's what I thought it was...but I thought it was weird to advertize it all over the hospital and welcome all students and staff. Does that sound weird to you?

I don't think they'd have many takers, actually. People are usually too busy to do it. There's another kind wherein a unit director goes to say hi to the patients..

It could also be a lecture-format presentation, where a specific pt history is discussed.I held a grand rounds presentation on a pt that I cared for who had lupus. She was in her 60's, and I was able to get old medical records from when she was a teenager (at the time, they diagnosed her with "hysteria"). I presented that diagnosis and emphasized that people with lupus are misdiagnosed for years and their chronic complaints are not taken seriously ("its all in their head"). I then went through the pathophysiology of the disease, treatments, complications, etc.

Yes, it is likely that it is in lecture format like the PP mentioned. At one hospital I work I was on the education council and we arranged "nursing grand rounds." A nurse would give a lecture on a specific topic. I loved it. I would love to go the grand rounds and hear what the doctors are talking about. I learn so much just by listening to the doctors.

Thank you everyone! Now I want to attend.

Where I work it's a lecture type format where a physician speaks about a particuar case study or a particular topic. It lasts an hour and is indeed advertised throught the hosptial and on the website.

In most cases, "Grand Rounds" are classroom presentations given on a regualar basis by a particular discipline. In a lot of hospitals, the physicians will present a "grand rounds" once per month. In many hospitals, nurses also present a "Nursing Grand Rounds" once per month -- a bigger, more formal presentation than the typical inservice. The daily rounds that attendings make with the residents and med students are usually not called "grand rounds." In a teaching hospital, such bedside rounds are simply part of the daily routine. In hospitals without as many residents or med students, they might be done less often, though, and be given a special name.
