Working 3 days a week simply leaves ample time for another job. The other reason is nursing sucks the life out of me. My second job pays less than half, has nothing to do with health care, but I do it because it makes me happy. Something nursing really doesn't do anymore.

I like the variety of three jobs. I like having the money from three jobs. I like having other options if one place seems to be heck bent on getting me PO'd - I'll go away for a while and see how they like me now, lol.

For me ...1. I like the work that I do in my part time job (teach at a local university)2. It gives me legitimate experience in another specialty -- something I might need someday if my full time job turns sour3. I might want to teach part time as a way easing into retirement -- and doing it now ocassionally gives me legitimate experience in that field4. I like the extra money. It's only a couple thousand each year, but that adds up. I'll be paying off my mortgate early.

I've been fired once already because of office politics. Caught me totally by surprise, had no inkling anything was wrong. It took me two months to find another job. A second, part-time job is now my 'backup'.

Money, experience etcIn places with no union where you can be fired at will...nice to have a backup because it takes a while to get on board after finally being hired.

Nursing isn't the only career in which people have multiple jobs. For many, all they can find is part-time work, so you get two of them to make ends meet. Firemen often have more than one job. So do paramedics. Working 12 or 24 hour shifts does often leave lots of time off during the week in which to pursue something of a different interest or add to your household income.

Need the extra income. Trying to pay off bills and get some savings. Can't always pick up overtime at my primary job and it does give variety.

For the same reason dogs lick themselves... because we can.Always good to be networking and learning...money is a bonus.

My PICU job is physically, emotionally and intellectually demanding. My home care job is ridiculously easy and mind-numbingly boring most of the time. I work nights and get a lot of planning, writing and the like during the ample downtime.I also find the ICU environment to be a bit of a revolving door, you never get to see how any of the kids did long-term. Home care you follow the same kid through thick and thin. It's very gratifying to bond with a family and watch little ones grow up and out of the need for nursing care.
