Malpractice Insurance

I hope everyone is having a beautiful weekend! I wanted to post a few questions I have been wondering. When you first started as a new grad, did you carry malpractice insurance? If so, for how long? Do you still carry it today? Also, where does a nurse go to get malpractice insurance?

Absolutely have my own. My facility claims they cover me but…1. What if I no longer work for them when the lawsuit is filed?2. Who are their lawyers looking out for? (Hint: it ain't me)3. Does the facility provide representation if called in front of the BON? (Hint: Nope)4. Does the facility provide information about situations? Marsh (www.proliability.com) is the other frequently mentioned company that specializes in covering nurses and allied health professionals. I would never work a single day without my own coverage. When I was in nursing school in the Dark Ages, my father, a physician, advised me to never trust an employer to protect my interests, and never work without my own coverage, and everything I've seen in the years since then has only reinforced to me what good advice that was.

I graduated in 1978 & our instructors drilled into our heads that we should carry our own liability insurance. I went with NSO & have been with them ever since.

Yes, get your own liability insurance.I just renewed mine that expired. I had forgotten about it, and then one day a family who was VERY unhappy with our facilty was filming a situation in the patient's room. No one was doing anything wrong, but anyone can sue for anything and make your life miserable, and they seemed like the type to do it.I renewed my insurance that night!
