What is Selective Service?

Is it true that you can go to jail or fine 250k$ once you're not registered in selective service?

One if you wanna sign up but you're already 26? What if you thought you were registered but when you check it, you're not in the system??

To all nurses there do you have any insight to this??'

Thank you.
Selective Service is the draft. Every male is required by law to register once they turn 18.

Formerly called "the draft" because people had to register and WERE pulled involuntarily into military service for prior wars, Vietnam being a prime example..................I disagree with having a selective service. It is so easy to corrupt and somehow, the rich and powerful never seemed to have to go involuntarily to serve in wars, whether they agreed to them or not.I know a lot will disagree, but I do not want my son to be used for cannon fodder in the next ill-conceived war for money or oil.Oh and I am veteran, as is my husband, and between us, we have 32 years' military service time.. So I think I have earned that right to my opinion.

I may well be mistaken on this, but I *think* males are NOT required to register in SS any longer. Thing is, I AM sure that if you DON'T, you also aren't eligible for Federal loans, grants, etc for school or anything else.Went through this with my kid for college; he was required to be registered in order to do the FAFSA stuff (IOW, before he turned 18).OP, if you've gotten Stafford loans for school......you're already registered!

As far as I know, males ARE still required to sign up. My son was.

Ah, ok. I wasn't sure. I thought it was one of those things where you don't have to BUT you lose the option of certain benefits. I guess you DO have to, and a penalty of not doing it is not getting those benefits...or something like that.

My school requires male students in the age bracket to provide proof they registered.

All male US citizen's (sexist I know) I required to sign up for selective service after their 18th birthday. This is so that there will be enough potential soldiers to mobilize for training should our current volunteer military fall short of being able to protect our country in time of war. I am sure that women will soon be included in this as well for the sake of equality. Don't you just love equal right's. PS my family has a long history of Military service going back to WWII and I want to send a heartfelt thank you for your service to any vets or currently active military on this forum.hppy
