Workers comp injury- injured back at work

I hurt my back at work last fall log rolling a 320 lb labor patient. Workers comp approved my claim. I finally had a spinal fusion surgery 11 weeks ago (my fifth spinous process completely broke off and was just floating). 3 weeks prior to my surgery, my employer let me go due to the fact that my FMLA time had expired and they could not hold my position until I was returned to full duty (which will probably be August or September).
I'm curious if anyone has had similar experiences in regards to being rehired by their employer. Am I considered a "liability" now since I filed a WC claim previously? I have not yet made a decision if I will try to go back to my passion of Labor and Delivery or look at other options that don't put so much of a stress on my back......... My only priority right now is to get my back healthy and strong again.
