Holiday Pay Policy

Recently, there has been a change in holiday pay policy where I work. Instead of being paid for the actual holiday worked, only staff working on the observed holiday will be paid at a holiday rate. It's become an issue this year because the July 4th holiday falls on a Sunday, but is federally recognized on the 5th.

What are your thoughts? Should nurses be paid for working the actual holiday since hospitals are open 24/7, or should they be paid for the observed holiday?
Since my present employer doesn't seem to pay holiday pay, it really doesn't matter to me. Either way, I don't get paid.

Well, people celebrate the 4th on the 4th, not the 5th. The 4th is when people go picnicking, barbecuing, and watching fireworks. Therefore, having the 4th off is much more desirable than having the 5th off. Nobody OBSERVES the 4th on the 5th, even though banks and the USPS may have the day off. Having the 5th off would be useless to me. People should get holiday pay for working the holiday.

i agree. i work for the city also and holiday pay is on the 5th. although the union argued so that regular benefited staff gets an extra day off if they have to work on the 4th, which falls on a sunday. but i am per diem, so that does not apply to me. im just working for regular pay this weekend.

If you work the actual holiday-pay for that day. If on the observed holiday-pay for that day. (But not for both days.)

Since the 5th this year is the 'day off', that is the day people should get holiday pay for. It becomes complex any time a holiday falls on a week end.

Just enjoy your day off on Sunday. Federally, if it fall on the Sunday it will celebrated on the following Monday. It is crazy so just enjoy and have fun. Everyone please be safe this weekend.

either you get paid for the actual holiday or for the legal holiday. it doesn't matter as long as it's consistent. if you're working the 4th this year, you'll probably have it off next year. it all evens out in the end.

I think I am gonna call in on the 4th. I don't get paid holiday pay and I work EVERY holiday weekend. Memorial day, fathers day, mothers day, Labors day. I'm quitting in two weeks anyways and have never called in for the past year and a half I have worked on this floor.That being said, yes I think people should be paid for the holiday they work, and in some cases need to be paid for the eve of. Lots of things go on around holidays. I think we even need to be paid holiday pay on black friday!

In my facility, nurses get holiday pay only if they're working the actual holiday--the observed holiday doesn't count for extra pay.
