hi i'm new to allnurses but i've found it very helpful reading threads over the last year or so. anyways i wanted to apply to yavapai nursing program in june but i would need a cna certificate before then as a prerequisite. is this even possible? i live in alameda california. i am willing to go a distance. this all comes after applying to many california nursing schools and getting rejected so now i am looking at out of state schools. or if you know of any adn schools that have no waitlist or extreme number of applicants that don't have cna as a prerequisite please let me know. does anyone know anything about admission at otero college in co, mainly if there is a waitlist. any suggestions appreciated!

Start calling your area nursing homes and see if they have a CNA course. A CNA class in usually 6 wks. Look into your local community college for CNA classes.

Hi Eveangelina,I took my CNA class through the Red Cross 2 years ago. At that time it was either 4 or 6 weeks - 5pm to 10pm M-F. I believe they had a shorter one that ran 8 hours a day. Cost me just under a grand and was far cheaper and quicker than anything at even my community college. Good luck!SoberGirl

Whoa! Just under a GRAND for a CNA cert??? Ours is $75 plus the book and uniform...you're looking at right around $200 total. I didn't pay $1000 for my first semester of nursing school! Hopefully CNA's in your area get paid well!

Hi there,I have made some calls to Otero - and apparently they have no wait list. I did take my cna class here in colorado. The places were I went is colorado springs, they start every month. I am thinking of going to otero in aug 11. i will be done my pre-reqa this year though. I also came from cali, i would take a visit if i were you. major cultural shock, i know i am willing to make the sacrifice. just make sure you are willing as well

Thanks,I did call otero college and that was my back up, but luckily I got on the alternate list for merritt college in CA and it looks as though I'm in. I was worried about what living so far away might do to my relationship with my fiance as it is so far away from a major airline. Its somthing I let people know about though, that you don't need to wait 3+ years to go to nursing school if you are willing to leave CA, as well as larger cities.
