What happens if you kill a patient?

After reading a scary post about a nurse who killed a patient by giving either the wrong dose of a med or by the wrong route, it made me wonder....what exactly happens if a nurse inadvertently made a drug error that causes a patient to die? I assume the nurse would be fired. Would the nurse lose her license? Would there be an investigation? Would the nurse be sued? Would the hospital pay a fine? Anyone know?
It very much depends on the facts and the circumstances of the incident coupled with the attitude of the employer.I have seen nurses fired for things far less serious than causing the death of a patient by their action or inaction.
