Blue Collar or White collar?

I think most of us think of ourselves as "white collar", even those of us at the bedside. But we are treated by management and administration as "blue collar".

Depends on what color a scrub top i wear.Right now, it's a green-collar job.(Really couldn't care less if it's considered a blue or white collar job)

We unionize, we punch a clock, we have mandatory OT, we wear cheap, shapless pajamas on the job (as a requirement), we compare workloads between each other (I worked so hard, and she didn't), we complain about our lot in life without becoming activists...these are blue-collar traits.On the other hand:We are proud of our "profession", we call ourselves professionals, we do very important work, we take great ownership of our work, we have college degrees, we are creative and intellegent, we have insight into what our institutions could do to make things run smoother...these are white collar traits.We come up short here in being able to define ourselves as a true profession. It is so frustrating!

I believe a while back someone said we cannot be considered a white collar profession truly, by labor dept standards, unless we all have BSN-entry level. I dont' buy that, but I have seen it said before here. I think the post above is well-put. I think it depends on perspective.

i'm definitely white collar. From what I've SEEN happening in nursing lately, I'd call it "stab me in the back/cat-fighting/nit-picky/young nurses are better than old nurses" collar service. If anyone can abbreviate the above into one word, give it a shot. :spin:
