Is this common? (jobs)

I applied for a nightshift med-surg position in a nearby city a few weeks ago and got a call back 1-2 days later. Being that I work nights, I missed the call but returned it when I woke up about an hour later.

I left a message with the required info but the recruiter never returned my call...apparently the position was filled fairly quickly but it seems "rude" to call me about it and then don't follow up with an email or phone message. I know they can't call every single applicant but they initiated the contact and then left me hanging. Has anyone had this happen?
I had an "employer" that would call at 9 or 10 at night, a time that I don't typically answer my phone. Invariably, when I returned the call the next morning I would encounter rudeness on the other end. For the life of me, I can't see why an employer wants to discuss an offer of work at 10 pm. Not surprisingly, I have never worked one day for this particular employer.

I had the exact same thing happen to me once. I finally caught up with the hiring manager and learned that she ended up hiring someone within the department for the position, but she never returned any of my calls when I'd had to leave messages.

Yes, I think I had one of those on Thursday early afternoon. I found I had missed a call about 13:15. There was no voice message just a pause, and then the sound of a land line with a cord slowly hanging up. My intuition says this, as this cell phone number, is one I have been extremely careful in giving out. I never get extraneous calls on it. I've been working on a lead or two that I generated myself, and wish it wasn't so easy to block incoming phone numbers.I am sure, they just have a list and if you pick up great, if not, you won't get another chance. That sucks.

Maybe they do have a list but I just say why leave me a message asking me to call back only to ignore me..only takes a few seconds to say not interested. I'm not gonna harp on it though...I'm glad for the job I do have.

It probably applies the same way as shift offers..... you snooze, you lose.
