Must have first aid items

Hello! I have a few first aid questions, and have been doing research and got a few different answers, so I thought I would throw it out here and see what responses I get. I am getting ready to live on the road with my boyfriend in our mobile glass studio. He is a glass artist, and I want to be prepared if he gets a burn wound or severe cut. So first question, what would be the best way to treat a 1st degree burn on the hand? More than likely this injury would occur from picking up hot glass or accidentially running a hand through the flame, so it would be painful, but probably nothing worse than 1st degree. And second, If he were to get any deep or large cuts from broken glass what would be the best immediate treatment?
I have a basic first aid kit (from wal-mart) that has band-aides, some TAO, and a few other basic supplies, but what other supplies would you put on a MUST HAVE list? Not just stuff for burn or cut treatment, but things as nurses you would want to have on hand at your home at all times. (FYI: its just me and my boyfriend, no children, if that helps narrow the list =) Thanks! and ANY advice would be much appriciated!

Your best bet would be to take an organized first aid class before you embark on this endeavor. You will learn how to treat a variety of emergencies and will also learn about the items in the first aid kit and exactly how to use them. You also learn what you will find useful and what the essentials are and what you may not necessarily need ( like replacing the cheap plastic tweezers with a decent pair of metal ones) Most local red cross chapters hold regular classes.

I googled "what to put in a first aid kit" and found a lot of really good links.I will agree with flare and say that taking a first aid class would be worth it. Otherwise research the internets for some good resources. One thing that I love having on hand for first aid kits is maxi pads. OP, you would never want to find you did the wrong thing and have an injury that should have been treated promptly and correctly by EMS, ER, or urgent care clinic -- turn out to be disfiguring or even life threatening. It's just not that simple, and you are asking questions that lead me to think you will try to treat injuries that are severe by yourselves.I agree with the suggestions to take a class to get a better idea of what needs professional intervention and what you two can handle on your own.
