My nurses day thoughtRating: (votes: 0) Everyone knows the importance of the day may 12.If you are a nurse its indeed you will not forget the significance of this particular day.May 12 is known as the international nurses day.Why this day is known as nurses day.I think most of the nurses are unaware about this fact. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has celebrated this day since 1965. In 1953 Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, had proposed that President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaim a “Nurses Day,” but he did not approve it. [1] In January 1974, the decision was made to celebrate the day on 12 May as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.who is this florence nightingale? Florence nightingale was an celebrated English nurse, writer and statistician. She came to prominence for her pioneering work in nursing during the Crimean War , where she tended to wounded soldiers. She was dubbed “The Lady with the Lamp” after her habit of making rounds at night. An Anglican , Nightingale believed that God had called her to be a nurse. Nightingale laid the foundation of professional nursing. As we all know as a nurse how much we are suffering through our duty hours to save a humans life.Even people are very relectunt to feed their, own fathers and mothers, how much we nurses are taking care of them assuming them as our own relatives. But noone are thinking how this fellow nurses are leading their life.As an indian nurse i know and i suffered as well the harassment of managements.Even some of the common people are also thinking that the word nurse is meant to be slave. But we know how we are dedicated to our work.Ignoring our own health we are trying to improve others health. The hospital managements only need some slaves to work.We all know the protest taking place in kerala which is known as the granery of nurses in india since 3-4months because of the immense harasment of management towards nurses. The revolution started due to a suicide of a fellow nurse named beena baby who was working in asian heart institute mumbai.I am using this occasion to pay rich tribute to her through my words who sacrificed her life for the whole nurses. The revolution must not concentrated in kerala but it have to spread all over india. So awake dear nurses and aware about the rights that what we needed and we deserves.Fight for the rights.we are not the subordinates of doctors but we are individual professionals. We have our own rights. And the another thing which i want to point out during this occasion is the diminishing quality of nursing care in india. If you are going to the rural part of india there are no qualified nursing professionels.Still india is lacking of well qualified proffesionals like nurses in rural areas.India is facing 50% shortage of nurses.Because of this who have to compromise “the patients”.I think Nurses governing body that is INC is aware about all the facts that what is happeningand but still they are keeping idle.Special regards to all the nurses association who worked hard and tried to bring out the plight of nurses infront of the society and still working hard to resolve the issues faced by the nurses.Be proud as a nurse and be dignified and dedicated to what the work we are doing.Happy nurses day to all my dear nurses. Last edit by Joe V on May 12, '12 very enlightening your thoughts regarding nursing. needless to say, tomorrow the facility where i work we nurses decided to honor florence nightingale by wearing our traditional "white uniforms" and most of the female nurses will be wearing their caps as well. i can't wait to wear my total white attire with a black stripe around my collar, i hope i'm not the only male nurse dressed in white :d. wishing you a great & blessed nurses day...aloha~ Comment:

Thirty two years ago today- this student nurse missed her pinning ceremony on account of being in the hospital giving birth. (An excused absence I hope) Fast forward to today - that baby I had on Florence's birthday is herself an RN. So Mothers' Day, Nurses' Day and birthdays are all celebrated this weekend.
