SCIP stands for Surgical Care Improvement Project. This is an initiative by national healthcare entities including Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal insurance agency and TJC or the Joint Commission, which accredits hospitals with an ultimate goal to improve surgical outcomes by preventing complications associated with surgery. There are core measures that every patient who undergoes surgery should meet and the number of core measures depend on the type of surgery performed.
