What to say when you call HR/Manager after an interview for a follow-up?

I just interviewed for a couple positions last week and both are very promising as I have great experience and references. My problem is, my manager doesn't know I have been looking and I would like to give my 2-3 week notice before moving which would be Monday the 21st. This is also the day I need to submit my schedule for the next month ( I planned on leaving after this current schedule). So I kind of have a rush put out to find if I have the job or not so that I can tell my boss with ample time before the schedule gets filled out. I plan on calling HR and talking to them and trying to get the Managers work number that I interviewed with for a "follow-up" but since this is a time sensitive issue, is there anyway I can bring that up to them to maybe get an idea if I got the job? Any advice from Managers or HR people?
