National Nurses week

National Nurse's week is right around the corner. In the facility you are employed in does your employer do anything to salute the nursing staff?
In the past my employer has given out cheap backpacks, pens and other supplies to show their 'appreciation' for the nursing staff. They've also provided catered food. I have no idea what management at my place of employment will be doing for Nurses Week 2013, but I will not be holding my breath in anticipation.

Comment:
Well my employer loves us so much they did away with it.

Comment:
My employer did away with National Nurse's Week years ago. However, we still celebrate Administrative Assistants' Week, Doctor's Day, etc., etc.

Comment:
The facility work in does not recognize Nurse's week either, they "celebrate" National Nursing Home week that follows next week. Makes me laugh, I see these companies on the Internet advertising nurses week "gifts", not sure who is buying or who is receiving them however!

I'm a NOC nurse & I came in & they have muffins for us & a luncheon on wed

Our hospital combines Hospital Week with Nurses Week. RT, Radiology, Lab all have their own weeks. No such thing as Doctor's Week, though. LOLWe usually get a lunch bag or some other type of bag with the hospital logo. There is always a free lunch day and midnight meal. And sometime during the week all the big wigs will walk around and make their presence known.

We combine Hospital Week and Nurses Week. Every day this week will be something different, from admin rolling around carts of snacks, to catered meal outside to small gifts and big sign on the lawn. Everyone looks forward to it, especially the catered meal. Sometimes there is a choir or band (from local High School) or dance class (little kiddies). Yes, night shift gets same opportunity only it all moves indoors as fewer people to feed. I really do not know what else they could do.

Comment:
They're providing tours of our new building and set up a nursing documentary, in the cafeteria on the weekend. Perhaps they have no discretionary money left over for this year with the new construction - because the last two years, they've at least done more than this.

Comment:
Maybe I'm too cynical, but stuff like "national nurses week" is just smoke and mirrors to distract employees from bad working conditions and lousy benefits.

And in the larger hospital systems, I suspect these things continue to exist largely to justify the continued existence of some irrelevant job or another. There's some drone in HR somewhere who's main job is to dream up and implement these pointless events. They probably have an office in-between the person who edits the hospital news letter and the person in charge of the pt satisfaction surveys.

Brandon.....I TOTALLLLLLLLY agree with and like your 2 posts. As another nurse said so eloquently..."keep your lanyards, lunch totes, pens, etc (that are really just ADVERTISEMENTS anyway!!!") And I'll add to that "keep your bagels, cookies, and crappy danish that are only going to make our blood sugar go sky high and then crash....."And in the case where I used to work----how about BRING BACK the (night) respiratory therapists, the phlebotomists that used to draw allll our labs, and the (night) unit secretary!!! 'Cuz yeaaaa, we all know patients just SLEEP all night, so we have extra time to do ALL those jobs, too!!! Ugh....I better stop now

Comment:
Brandon, I also liked what you said about the HR person whose job is to dream up these pointless events.......LOL!!!!!!! Where I used to work, we used to have a person who would make all these colorful posters to annouce POINTLESS events and other stuff that NO ONE went to. Everything about it made me roll my eyes, but it also REALLLLY bugged me to think of how much paper and colored INK was wasted.....I know the color cartridges for my home printer are NOT cheap, so those flyers must've cost a FORTUNE.....too bad that money couldn't be used to keep our night secretary, or someone to draw labs, or our respiratory therapist!!!!!
