Best geographic and specialty area for middle age nursesRating: (votes: 0) I'd say that middle aged nurses should work at the specialty they most enjoy in the geographic area where they can find employment and want to live. Comment:
The average nurse is middle-aged.

Dialysis is a specialty that isn't too hard on the middle aged body and one in which you can find work pretty much anywhere. I am middle aged myself (48 going on 49), and I don't think I could hack being a floor nurse again, especially on twelve hour shifts.

Geographic? Where ever your family, friends, interests and employment can be found. If it coincides with the sort of climate you prefer, all the better. Speciality depends on what you are experienced in. I meet a lot of the older nurses in PACU, occupational health and procedural areas.

Thank you all for replying. I am turning 49 in a month, I know most nurses are middle age I am right there. I have an additional concern of back problems, I have worked many areas including tele, med/surg, surgery, peds and home health. I tried all of them because of my interest in the area, I enjoyed surgery but am not physically able to handle it anymore, I tried home health and it is not very back friendly. I am just stuck in a rut and am seeking all options and opinions. Thanks

OK - that makes your question clearer. "Middle age" is just too vague isn't it?I know many younger nurses who also have back pain & mobility problems... and some "extremely tenured" nurses who are hale and hearty (e.g., very energetic 79 YO house supervisor that works nights.& runs rings around younger colleagues - srsly)

With your experience in different areas, you could consider telephone triage.
