Is it possible to be hired as an extern yet?

I'm so glad I found this site, I have so many questions! I wasn't sure whether to post this here or in the student section. I just started a BSN program as a winter admit and so far I'm doing really well. My problem is that I NEED a job this summer. Badly. I was hoping to find a job that would give me experience in the medical field. However all of the extern programs I've found require at least one semester of adult clinical rounds...something I won't have until next fall. So next summer looks promising, but I'll be broke long before that. Is it worth applying to medical offices and hospitals yet? Or should I just try to find *any* job and wait until summer 2009 to find a relevant job? I've only worked in retail before, and that was in high school. I got married immediately after high school, started college full time and year round, and had two beautiful kids. Now I'm looking for jobs but they all want me to have had clinicals or experience. Is there any hope for a nursing student with one semester of experience to actually get a job in the medical field? Thank you so much for any help or advice!
If you're in four-year program.. many hospitals will accept you as an extern the summer going into your senior year (or fourth-year). That's always been my understanding. I was lucky to get an externship my summer going into junior year beacuse I had taken a nursing assistant course when I was in high school and kinda slipped through the cracks. Hospitals always look to see you have experience... so build it up these first couple of summers and then look for the externship.During my sophomore year in college, I worked as a pharmacy tech at a local drugstore. It was GREAT! I was working the same time I was taking Pharmacology, so I could get a hold of drug inserts and other useful tools to help me on my test. There are plenty of other medical jobs you can do without working in a hospital yet. There's no hurt in asking, though. On the side, you could always work as a nursing aide, medical asst in an MD office, a unit secretary, ER tech, EMT, etc. Any hospital you apply to later down the line will love seeing those things. Good luck!!
