Diploma to MSN Question

Hi Everyone,

I'm changing careers, and am expecting admission to a diploma program any day now. My eventual goal is to pursue an advanced practice position...Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Anesthesia.

I know that diploma programs emphahsize clinical components and don't include most of the baccalaureate courses that ADN or BSN programs do...which can hinder advancement and/or continued education for a diploma RN.

I have a BA in a non-science field, along with an MBA. Would this compensate for me not having a baccalaureate nursing background? Will I be able to pursue and be considered for the same type of opportunities & continued education as an ADN or BSN RN?

Hi Matt.As a diploma nurse you will enjoy the exact same opportunities as any other RN expect for those positions that require a BSN or advanced degree, which entry level BSNs don't get either. But diploma nurses enjoy a wide variety of job opportunties. Your MBA might come in handy were you considering nursing administration. Howver, with your goals of being a NP or CRNA, eventually you will need to get a BSN. There are many online RN to BSN programs you can do. I know Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences, an NLN approved RN to BSN program has an Diploma to BSN component.

You can also do a bridge program for an MSN. There are graduate nursing schools that accept non-clinical students for a two year stint toward a MSN.
