Any tips about getting my first job as a RN

Hi everybody, I just joined allnurses.com today. I was wondering what tips you have about getting my foot into the door for my first job as an RN. I just graduated in May, and passed my boards. What I have been hearing so far from employers is that they want experienced RN's. What can I do?
Where have you been applying? If you've been applying at hospitals, be aware that many facilities across the U.S. have been eliminating or scaling back on their new grad internship programs because management regards new grads as "too expensive" to train and retain. Many hospitals prefer the experienced nurse who can hit the ground running without much orientation because this is cheaper for the bottom line.In my area, the next wave of new grad hospital internships starts in September, and interviewing for these spots is taking place right now. They are very competitive, and slots are being filled as we speak.Have you been applying at workplaces outside the hospital? Many of these settings will give a new grad a chance and hire without the 1 year of experience. Nursing homes, clinics, doctors offices, urgent care centers, freestanding dialysis centers, home health, hospices, adult day care, assisted living, psychiatric facilities, and group homes for clients with mental retardation are all options.
