BSN or Specialize?

My friend recently went on an interview and was told by the unit manager that being certified in something is more beneficial than obtaining a BSN. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I'm interested in obtaining my BSN, but it will take a while since I'll be paying out of pocket (absolutely no loans). I am also interested in starting a forensics nursing certificate program next summer. What has been everyone's overall experience in this?
Specialty is great, but what happens when you are specialized and want to move into a totally different specialty? The BSN is more important. A BSN prepares you for entry into just about any clinical area, and allows the ability to move around when desired.
Comment:
Do both.
Comment:
Many nationally recognized specialty certifications now require BSN for eligiblility - so it may not be an either/or situation.
