Apply In Person or Mail Resume???

I just recently renewed my license after being out of nursing for several years. I have 14 years experience as an OR nurse and would like to apply at a couple of surgery centers. I no longer live in the city that I previously worked so I can't go back to my old job. One of the centers is about a mile from my home. I have the name of the contact person at both places. Should I go there in person and leave a resume or should I mail them attention to the appropriate contact person. I have no idea if either place has any openings or if they would hire me if they did. Both places do a lot of orthopedics and that is my background. Any advise would be appreciated. My previous job was the only nursing job I ever had and I did a preceptorship with them my last year of nursing school and never really applied just was hired after graduation so I'm not sure best way to let employers know I'm looking.
