License help!Rating: (votes: 0) I need your advice. I am in nursing school in California but will be moving to Illinois when I graduate. Do you recommend I take the NCLEX here and transfer my license to Illinois? Or take the NCLEX in Illinois? Thanks for your help! ![]() I would find out if you would have to take the test in the state where you are getting the degree and also if the state where you are going would let you take the exam there with your degree in CA and as the first test. If it were me I would contact the Office of Professions for both states and get the exact info. I don't know if those states have reciprocity. Comment:
The NCLEX is a National Exam... you can take it at any testing center in the US, regardless of the state you are seeking a license. You just have to apply for the specific license and have the results from the exam sent to that specific board of nursing.
Comment:
take it in the same state where you went to school. That way all the paperwork is familiar to that Board and there is less hassle. Then do whatever Illinois says to get licensed in Illinois.
Comment:
That would cost a lot of money, you are essentially paying for two licenses for the same period of time, because neither are compact states. See what it would take for Illinois to issue a license by examination, weigh the pros and cons.

Thanks guys! I appreciate your feedback. It almost seems easier to get my license here in California and then get ANOTHER license in Illinois. But I am still trying to figure out how it all works.I don't get the paperwork for both states - they obviously need proof that I graduated before I sit for NCLEX..but I am still able to register before then. But then how does the BON deem me eligible to take the test when I still haven't graduated? I'm just lost.
