Autism Immunization debate how nurses can help

I so appreciate this post. I'm currently a nursing student- but I'm also mother of two. I have been amazed at the one sidedness of teaching regarding vaccines in nursing school. The risks of vaccinating are either not discussed, or they're dismissed as misinformation. Neither of my children is fully vaccinated according to the recommended American schedule- because I think it's too much for their little systems to handle in such a short span of time. I appreciate someone stepping out of the black or white/ wrong or right mode. It seems that either side of the debate is perfectly willing to fudge facts, exaggerate, or cover up important details in order to make their case. All this does is make it more difficult for parents and, yes, health professionals, to have truly informed consent.I think most of us are really looking for the same bottom line and it's not dollar signs; it's healthy children.

I feel that we all have to have an open mind about viewpoints on immunizations. I have a 3.5 year old son and he is fully up to date on his shots actually just got his last 3 today. I felt that the need outweighed the risks for his immunization. I did however delay and separate the shots. I made my own schedule for my son. It did make more trips to the doctor, but it was worth him getting 5-7 shots at once. I only liked to allow 2-3 at a time. Just because we live in a world of advanced technology, doesn't mean that's going to save a child from dieing from an RSV infection. Just think how as you parent you feel when your child is sick, and imagine if they were sick with pneumonia or RSV or any life threatening disease. I could not live with myself, letting my child suffer in a hospital and possibly die because I choose not o vaccinate him. Many studies are being done now that states that Autism is predominantly linked to women who did not take pre-natal vitamins before/during pregnancy. But does this get much headlines or news report... The media, prints, what sells. Look how big a fuss and how many celebrities that became involved because of the mass media attention. I'm sure whoever the publishing companies were, made millions, if not billions. If someone paid you a million dollars to publish an article on merely the CONS of immunizations, probably a hard case to pass up.Here is a link to a website I have recently come across, http://www.webmd.com/brain/autism/ne...er-autism-risk

My son is autistic and I took prenatal vitamins. As for immunizations...my son had no reactions to his. He was very active while I was pregnant and very fussy and up all night when he was born. Very difficult to comfort and liked figure eights. Only thing was he was jaundice as a newborn. I don't know the cause but we need to make some major progress on treatment!
