oh my! haha when i was a student, one of the nurses told my classmate to get a stool sample from a pt. She did, in fact...she came back with a full container of stool. ohhh the life of a student having to deal with any task for the first time hehe.

Word to the wise, if you have a suppository of any type do not put them down with in reach of patient while you are gloving up. Patients have been known to grab them and eat them.

One of my students was to give a Dulcolax suppository. When I handed it to her, she said "what am I supposed to do with this?" I about fell on the floor laughing! The patient said "you stick it in my a$$ silly". OMG!!!!!

I had a student nurse the other day....carried her coffee cup w/lid everywhere. Wouldn't put it down for anything, not even as she took history from the patient. We (staff) were left thinking "what the hell has she been (not) taught?"

While I find all of these incidents funny, I also find them ummm sad and kinda appalling. When I was a student nurse, our instructors made sure we understood and were well prepaired for each procedure before we preformed it for the first time and also 9 times out of 10 we had already seen someone perform the proceedure. No "winging it" for us. Even though we might be nervous, we could rely on our recent "walk through" with our instructor to get through it and most times our instructor or another seasoned nurse was right there with us. I guess times have changed in nursing school in more ways than one. I'm glad I was never hung out to dry like that and not well prepaired for even the simplest of procedures. You might have considered it hand holding but by my last quarter, I felt confident enought to handle 3-4 patients care and know when I didn't know something and didn't feel uncomfortable to say, I haven't done this before, can you explain and accompany me while I preform this procedure.

When I was a student nurse, I had a patient with rapid afib with a ventricular rate that didnt coincide. at the time, I forgot it had to do with not all the atrial impulses capturing in the ventricle, so as the nurse and md were musing about it over the patient, I said "it's like he has PEA but he's not dead."I thought he was snoozing but he totally heard me and was outraged.I chuckle about this. Oh the things I will never say again!

i am a student nurse. You know what, i was so unfortunately where my schedule for posting earlier than my clinical practice. That day, i weight a baby with his buttock sticking with **** on the weighing scale. Oh god, i just not prepare to do it... my clinical lecturer saw it and scolded me very loud in-front of every students and baby. oooh... it just so embarrassing. However, without that, i couldn't have learned.

Lets see.... well as a student nurse, first semester, I didn't really pick up on the fact that my pt was a bit demented. She seemed pretty with it so I asked her if she could swallow pills, she said yes. So I gave her the pills and she proceeded to chew her iron pills!!!!! Talk about looking stupid! (me, not the pt, lol). Now I'm a bit more keen on dementia

using the (empty, hopefully clean!) commode container as a basin to give a patient a bedbath! oops.

When I was doing my 2nd year the nurse and I were walking with an enema that I was going to give to the patient. She told me to make sure I put gloves on, I laughed and said ok, I'm thinking well duh... After it was all done she told me that she had a student forget to put gloves on, she reminded her though, then the student lubed up the enema and put it in the patient without taking the cap off.... OMG the poor patient those twist caps are like this ___!___
