Hiring/Job Question

Hi everybody!

This may be considered a silly question, but while I was reading a thread some people mentioned that nurses who are attractive and young get hired less than those that are not pretty and are on the older side. Is this true? I am just curious because it was interesting to read. Has anyone had any negative experiences in the interviewing process?

Guys, it is an honest question. I thought it was interesting and therefore I wanted to ask other people if that was true. I'm not a nurse and do not know what it is like. Many nurses that I know tell me that nurses eat their young so I am curious.

Well we'd have to hire some young'uns in order to have them around to eat, wouldn't we. So your logic is already not stacking up.

Research actually indicates the opposite. Yes, legit research was done on this. I'm not sure if they've ever done it in direct correlation to medical-related fields, though. In my own personal experience, I actually generally look quite a bit younger than my age, I am petite, and am moderately attractive. In my own travels through life, people older than myself don't take me seriously because they don't think I'm old enough to know anything and people younger than me are cheering in the back of their stupid heads, "****!!!!" I'm looking forward to some greys and crow's feet.American society is so incredibly wrapped up in looks that I think it isn't unreasonable to note it does affect professional success and opportunity. Honestly, it's appalling. I believe the most qualified should always get the job. If I get passed over by someone else, I want to know it's because I wasn't the best person for the position. I also want to know I got the job because I was the best person for it. On a side note....can't deny that the way I look has gotten me hired, but I won't say where. Let's just say... Looks mattered. It had nothing to do with the medical profession (and I'm 99% sure was completely legal).

When I started my nursing career I was 20 years old, skinny and pretty decent to look at. Now I'm 32, have two kids and am overweight honestly. I have always done well when on the job hunt. I think it really depends on too many things to answer this question simply. It depends on the interviewer, and you mostly. If you come off as smart, confident, and a good person/nurse I think you can get any job you want.
