A question regarding expired licensure.

Hello,

I am looking for some help regarding my situation.
I have been a working RN in NY during 2011-2013. In 2013 I had to return to my native country. Later, my NY license has expired. Right now, I am planning to return to NY in the coming months and I am trying to find out how can I renew my license. I visited the NYSED website where I have been told that my license registration period has expired.
Does anybody here would know what should I do to be able to renew my license?

If they're telling you too much time has passed and you're no longer eligible to renew, you may have to start over and apply for a new license. You can only "renew" an active license. Once a license has expired, there's nothing to renew, you're just a person who doesn't have a license. Each state sets its own standard for what kind of "grace period" it will allow for renewals after the expiration date has passed.Have you talked to a live person at the NY BON? That is what I would do next.

Question: if OP were working as a nurse in his/her native country, would s/he have been able to renew the New York license while doing so?

You may be able to apply to have your license reinstated. There are usually very specific requirements for reinstatement, but the BON should be able to tell you about those.
