Negotiating Salary

Hi everyone,

I am a new grad RN and I was recently hired as a new grad RN. I accepted and I signed all the paperwork. I am just waiting to start on June 1st.

I was wondering, is it too late for me to negotiate salary? Also, if I do negotiate salary how many dollars increase can I ask? Is $5 too much?

You don't. You may negotiate yourself out of a job. You cost the facility money in training and education. You have no bargaining chip. The time to negotiate is at the time of offer so even if you were experienced and uniquely qualified the window to negotiate is gone now.

I also would not negotiate as a new grad with no experience. Since you have already signed paperwork, I don't think you can. Sorry :/

Plus if you are in California as your profile indicates be thankful you have an offer! The unemployment rate for new grad nurses in CA is up to 50%! Many nurses spend one to two years searching for their first RN job.

Only time you can negotiate as a new grad is if you have multiple offers. Otherwise don't mess around, especially when you've already accepted the position. And yes 5 youd probably get laughed out of the room asking for that big of a raise with zero experience. Now if you found out all the other new grads who were hired at the exact same time are making that much more then you, yeah I'd mention it.

Thank you everyone for bringing me back to reality. I am so fortunate to have found a job so I am crazy for even contemplating a negotiation. Haha. It was that my friends got hired and are getting $5+ more than me so I thought maybe I should have negotiated.I got in a new grad program for Med-Surg floor. However, they said after 6 months on M/S, they will train me for ICU which is what I wanted in the first place. And its day shift so I got very lucky!Cathy

I would not attempt negotation now. You "accepted" the terms of the position already, dear. And boy all of us on here wish we could negotiate for a $5/hr raise!!

Cathy, if you don't mind me asking, what was the starting pay that was offered to you?
