ophthalmology-eyes in general

I went to the eye doctor today. They have a ton of support staff. Is there such a thing as an eye nurse? I assume for surgical procedure there are eye (i can't keep typing ophthalmology over and over LOL) nurses, but are there? What are the credentials of the people that help eye doctors? It is very specialized. I didn't think to ask today.

I may have some funky auto-immune issue regarding dry eyes, so it wasn't your run of the mill eye check-more medicine related.

I am very squeamish about eyes, so I have never looked into it. I have floated to an ENT floor where they do some eye sx, but usually they are bandaged so I wasn't grossed out.

Just curious. There is no specialty listed here, so I wasn't sure....
When I had my Lasik performed, a nurse (not a tech, but a real nurse) did give me my pre-op Valium, double check my consent and assisted the doctor during my procedure. I also worked with a nurse who had worked in the PACU at the Eye Center of a major medical center. It was a good job which she highly recommended.
