So discouraged can't get a job

I've been a public health nurse for almost 5 years. I've never worked in an acute care setting. I went on 2 interviews this week, at 2 different hospitals. I haven't heard back from the first hospital. They told me I would hear something in 1-2 weeks. The second hospital I really, really like and I think I had a great interview. Well, I just checked my status online and I got rejected. However, I think there might be some confusion. I have several applications on file. One dated 6/3. The other dated 7/20 (this is the one I interviewed for). Well, the 7/20 application is rejected, but the 6/3 application says "You are currently being considered for this position). The online system doesn't tell me which department so I can't figure out if its the same floor. Do you think HR mixed them up? I called the recruitor but she was gone, and she is off Mon. and Tues. So now I have to wait.

Here's the other thing. I called the clinical coordinator that sat on the interview. She said she doesn't know anything about HR, except they should have called me too. Do they call for regrets? I've never gotten a call from this hospital before, and I've had a handful of applications turned down. Tell me what you think. I know I'm obsessing a little, but I really wanted this job.
Oh, and the Director told me in the interview that she just hired FIVE NG nurses but she would put me into the orientation and preceptorship with them. She talked as if I had the job.

Sounds like you're closing in, keep up the follow-up with this employer. Your persistence will make up for their lack of organization or their not knowing as to what side of the net they're playing on.

I have never gotten a call for a regret to inform you, but I have recieved e-mails or nothing. Give them until wed. and then give them a call again. That is my suggestion to you.

I don't know if this is common in your area, but where I live there is a large regional medical center that posts what I call "ghost" jobs. You know, the ones you apply for, maybe even interview for, but don't get hired for because the position either doesn't exist or because they hired an internal candidate (and had more than likely intended to do so all along). I HATE that. I wonder how those HR people even sleep at night? In this economy, I think giving people false hope is cruel and unnecessary punishment; but right now it's an employer's market, and they can do whatever they want with impunity. Phooey.

Or was this a generic application, such as "any medical floor"?And no, they don't call you for rejections, an online (form) letter will be sent.It does sound to me as if you're no longer being considered for the job you interviewed for (it's unlikely they would have rejected the wrong application). However, you never know, and can certainly call to confirm next week. It may pay off to stay in touch with the nurse recruiter, it certainly shows interest.Best of luck to you!DeLana

It sounds like we are in a similar place -- I having been working in community health at a safety-net clinic for the past year, and before that I worked 6mo at skilled nursing facility. I am beginning to start to research positions at hospitals...and am finding that it is still a competitive market for those w/o lots of hospital experience. please keep me informed about how your job search goes! How are you marketing yourself to nurse recruiters/ during interviews since you do not have the technical skills of floor nurses (at least i dont!). My triage, prioritization and communication skills are very good...but I feel like all they are looking for is acute care/CC experience and my year in public health is going to do me nothing!
