Small nose piercings at work?Rating: (votes: 0) ![]() Quote from SarahAnn10I am currently in college to become a nurse and also thinking about getting my nose pierced. Nothing huge, just a little stud or gemstone. I am worried that when I do have to attend clinicals or get a job at a hospital the dress code will require me to take my nose piercing out. I am interested in hearing about your experiences with this! Thank you! Comment:
Quote from lpnstudentin2010my nursing school requires them be removed. one set of earrings in the ears is the only allowed thing.

I honestly don't remember what the guidelines were in school, but at the small hospital where I work small nose piercings are acceptable. We are also allowed any number of ear piercings, as long as they don't interfere with work, and one ring on each hand. We are also allowed to have visible tattoos, and the more I read here, the more I'm glad for my little facility.

The hospital I work at has a pretty strict dress code, and still allows one small stud. I remember that my nursing school forbade it, though.

Most rules say to not wear them but I have seen many nurses with them and I barely notice them because they look like a speck of glitter. I would not wear them in clinical school situations but it should be ok for jobs so long as it is very tiny.

We just received memo regarding tatoos and piercings--piercings only in ears and tatoos covered while at work--but the memo also states that we have to wear undergarments! Which made everyone laugh! I think as long as its not tacky and gaudy and in "good taste", we are professionals after all!

I have a nose stud and have no plans to take it out for school. They make clear studs for this type of situation and I will see if they will allow that. I will only take it out if I absolutely have no other choice.

While a little stud can often look cute, most establishments are going to say it's a no-go. There are other things to think about too...some elderly pts or their family may not respect you as much, no matter your skills. (I'm not saying that SHOULD BE, but sometimes it is that way). Regardless, you want their trust. Also, you may increase your chances of developing a nasty skin infection if you were unfortunate enough to be splashed in the face by bodily fluids...and it happens!!

Most nursing schools don't allow it even if the clinical facility does.

As far as I've seen it's fine at my school and clinical sites, since a small nose stud is often worn for religious/cultural reasons.

I had a nose piercing once upon a time. The nursing home where I worked wouldn't allow it.
