I prefer working with new grads or non-hospital nurses

Is it just me or what but I noticed a trend :many of the hospital nurses are burned out, mean, show bad attitudes and nurses who are employed outside of the hospital settings or are just starting their career are generally more pleasant to work with, have over all better attitude, enthusiasm.

It is sad to say but working with a new grad or non-hospital nurse is a like a breath of fresh air and working with many of the hospital nurses is like working in a coal mine.
I guess you're right in some ways. There are some nurses that come to work, hate their jobs, are so negative and try their best to drag you down with them. I have a dark sense of humor on the job...but I like being a nurse...If I didn't laugh, I'd cry...but I do try to avoid the negative people...it's one thing if their cracking jokes..it's another thing if their hurting the morality of the unit.

But then the new grad in the hospital can quickly turn into the kind of nurse you don't want to work with.

I am still a student, but there are many new grads who are working on the surgical unit that I am on right now who did the same program as me. I like to stick with them because they can relate to what I am going through, and cant remember what the program is like etc.But I like to work with nurses who have been around forever because they are experts at what they do and the way that they do it. I seem to pick up time management skills, rationale as to why she/he does it this way instead of that, and overall the knowledge and experience is far beyond my own

OP, are you a relatively new grad yourself?

And what are some of the things these "Hospital Nurses" did to you? And what made you think they worked in a coal mine?

I was stressed out when I was a new grad because I worried constantly about what I may have messed up on or I didn't do this or that. I had tried to do everything exactly as I learned in school, and combining that with being slower than everyone else made me start to pretty much hyper-ventilate at the sight of the elevators taking me to my unit. I agree with you that outpatient jobs with 9-5 workdays, no guilt trips about coming in on your day off or having the audacity to be sick make life sunnier in general whether you're a new grad or a grizzled old battle-axe.

Sounds like the unit you are on - not the fact that they are old nurses. It may also be something the NM encourages - tattle telling.
