New RN going into Cath Lab HELP

I am graduating on December 8th and will sit for boards some time in FEB hopefully but I precepted in ICU at St. Francis in Columbus GA and had hoped to get a job there and unfortunately they did not have room for me there but have offered a potential position in the cath Lab. I am slightly nervous but really excited at the opportunity to be the very first new grad hired in their cath lab but at the same time I am nervous. What are your thoughts as to what I can do to better prepare myself and give myself more confidence such as books and so forth. I know I'm not going to have any real confidence until I can have some actual hands on experience during orientation but anything that you guys think will give me a boost and better prepare myself please do tell! Also some positive work experiences and positive outlooks on this vs other specialty critical care floors is great too!
First, if you dont' have your ACLS get the book, learn the crap out of it, then take the class. Second, buy a current edition of Grossmans Cardiac Cath book. It is for physicians but you will learn all about caths, anatomy and other things. It will put you way ahead of the curve for a new cath lab RN, and should impress your employer that you are that dedicated. If you don't want to spend the money try to get from you library system. But anyway, learn your ECG rhythms and all your infarct patters.

Ok, heres where I may come across sounding like an @ss. If they offer you a job in the cath lab they are doing you a disservice, and if you accept their offer you are doing yourself a disservice. Cath lab is a technical unit and your knowledge base needs to be up to par. As a new grad you still lack the basic skill set necessary to succeed in that position. Many people may argue that a new grad "needs" to spend a year or two on MS then move if they desire to PCU, ICU, ED....etc. Im not sure I agree with that, but taking a new grad and putting them some place like the Cath Lab or, in my opinion peds or ob will not provide an environment conducive to learning the basic skills needed to become a proficient nurse. You may flourish in cath lab but what happens when you decide to leave and try something else? You will lack many of the assessment skills and many basic nursing skills necessary to be successful in other areas. If you are convinced that you need to start out in a "critical care" area rather than med surg. hold out, and find a position in an PCU or ICU, develop the basic skills you need to succeed.Good luck.

follow the advice of nurse2033. Know your rythms. Read up on the cath proceedures/anatomy you will be dealing with. Learn your cardiac drugs and your sedation drugs. You will most likely be doing your own conscious sedation too. Take ACLS asap after you read the book a few times, dont do an online class, go for the real deal somewhere.
