Recording output from a CTT drainage

good day,

after a chest tube insertion, what is the standard amount of fluid that is initially filled in the drainage bottle? does it have to be sterile nss? how to document or record output from a ctt drainage? do i have to drain every shift and fill in again with the standard amount of fluid?

We use sterile water. Fluid usually goes to -20cm level, but the md orders might say otherwise. You will refill the water more frequently if it is attached to suction, due to evaporation. A chest tube system is a closed sterile system and is only opened when the system is full with drainage and needs to be replaced. I have not worked with glass bottles in quite some time. I measure the output by placing a mark with tape when I first walk into the pts room and go from there. Always have a package ready at bedside of foam tape, Vaseline gauze, clamps, gauze and suture removal kit- both for the patient and the md, saves a lot of time and grief running for supplies.

Best to read your facility's procedure manual. It's been many years since I've seen anything other than a closed system that does not get drained at all, and has measurements marked directly on it..Even if you are still using a glass bottle system, nothing gets drained. Is this a homework question?!!!

Sorry, I don't recognize your flag. What country are you in? Don't see glass bottles used much in the U.S, but I could use a little refresher just in case.

I think it's the flag of the Philippines.
