When a nursing home shuts down.Rating: (votes: 0) Call your state unemployment office and ask if declining to take a job 120 miles away would really disqualify you for unemployment. Not sure who you should ask to challenge the loss of PTO and severance. I would definitely look into whether they can do this legally or not. I'm sure the company is hoping you'll all believe they're telling you the gospel truth and fold like a house of cards.Hope you can find some better answers than they are offering you. Comment:
Is this a facility that has a contract? If they are contractually obligated to offer alternative employment, they may be trying to follow it. Regarding severance pay and unemployment, check out your local unemployment office and see if this is the case. Unemployment varies from state to state, and severence pay varies from company to company. Good luck.
Comment:
The unemployment and PTO things are probably not legal. Contact your state DOL and unemployment office.Severance, unless under contract, they can probably withhold.IANAL

I give up. What is "IANAL"? The only thing I could come up with is, "I Am Not A Liar," which I don't think anyone thinks you are.

Just to let you know I am not looking for legal advice. All I want to know is if other people get the same "this ain't right" gut reaction to this that I got.

Wow. Oramar...I'm wandering if this is a local place. I think we are in the same area and you have me thinking. Could you PM me the name?I can't see how they can say that offering a job 120 miles away (2+ hrs or more if we are in that same area) is okay.

When you are a computer engineer, that is frequently what happens when your company is bought out -- I was "sold" and told if I wanted a paycheck, I had to relocate 750 miles; if I didn't, then I would not be paid for unused vacation time, etc., received no severance package and would be considered a "no rehire" -- and of course the people 2 levels above me who didn't want to move to Texas got a "golden parachute."If you did relocate, I think you'd find they really didn't expect you to take them up on their offer and the job could evaporate after a few months due to a"unexpected economic downturn," "right sizing" or the implementation of a "force reduction."
