double major in social work and nursing

hello,

I'm a high school senior and I'm interested in what you more experienced people would recommend for someone who is interested in doing nursing as a volunteer, and not as a primary career. My father did the PeaceCorps in Africa, and having followed the wars and famines in sub-saharan Africa I've always felt compelled to find a way to help.

Also, I think that having at the very least some knowledge of the medical profession would help me if I ever worked as a hospital social worker or with veterans or as a case manager.

So I was wondering if
  • has anyone here double majored and gotten either an ASN/BSW or a BSN/BSW? If so, did you find it really difficult? How long did it take you to graduate?
  • What is the difference between an ASN and a BSN? Since I don't intend to be solely a nurse, would the ASN be enough to be familiar with the profession and the system?
  • I am taking a gap year, during which time I have the chance to take college classes at a continuing education program. Are there any prerequisites classes that you can recommend that I take? Like bio 101?
Also, if there are any books or articles or pieces of advice you have for people considering nursing I would be so grateful to hear them!!!

Thank you so much for your time!!! I look forward to hearing from you!
Burnout city!!! Whew. Just thinking about nursing/sw double major makes me want to crawl under a rock and cry. Good luck in whatever path you choose.
