Nursing Survey: Violence in the Workplace

Rating:
(votes: 0)

9 Many of you have viewed the very disturbing video of a 68 year old male patient in a Minnesota hospital who chased and brutally attacked several nurses with a metal pole from his hospital bed last week. Four nurses were injured. One suffered a collapsed lung, and another a fractured wrist. Police say the man was delusional and paranoid. This behavior was very out of character for this patient as he was not considered a violent person.

This highlights the unexpected dangers health care workers face every day in the workplace. A survey from the International Healthcare Security and Safety Foundation found that 60% of workplace violence occur in healthcare facilities.

Have you witnessed or been a victim of violence in the workplace? Take our survey and share your experiences with and opinions of workplace violence.

Just want to point out that question 4 requires an answer, even if violence was not witnessed. Can that be changed or an N/A option added? I chose other, then commented none.

Thanks for the input. We have corrected it.

Suggest making space to more easily enter more than one experience at different workplace. Also was not clear if want the workplace/specialty/state where incident occurred or when incident occurred. I also want to comment that I chose "don't know" in response to question regarding legislating safe workplace. I think we have too many laws on the books, and OSHA is a better forum to deal with workplace violence prevention. There needs to be a way for an employee to document an incident even if there are no serious injuries as my 40 yrs of Nursing experience there have been multiple episodes, but only one was documented with a police report or OSHA report.

tnbutterfly-the version I just took still did not have a n/a response choice on question 4

Also had to use "other" on question 4 to indicate more than one answer.

Location. Refuses to accept Canada. None of our provinces are listed but you have to enter a state even when you answer in "other"

So when can we see the results of the survey?
