Nursing School or not?

I was just accepted to a 2 year BSN program at a VERY competitive university (I already have a BA and an MA); I'm supposed to start in June. This is a second career choice for me. I am older and completely self supporting. After finishing all the pre-req's at a community college and working as a CNA in a hospital I'm really questioning if I want to do this?

I absolutely hated 12 hour shifts; I think they are horrible (I NEVER sat down except 20minutes for lunch). Floor nursing was not what interested me even before my hospital experience. I did work in PostOp a few times and enjoyed that tremendously. I love the patients and was never "grossed" out by blood, vomit, etc which actually surprised me. The medical field intrigues me and I hate to give up this opportunity but... any suggestions out there??? Obviously I make the final decision... but curious if anyone has any words of wisdom to share.
The beauty of nursing is there are so many different areas and if you are cool with bodily fluids that increases your options. My concerns for someone "older and self-supporting" is your motivation for changing careers especially since you already have 2 degrees. Frankly I wouldn't be interested in taking a hit on my income for the time it takes to go through nursing school and establish a new career at this point in my life unless it would mean a huge pay increase. When people argue that it is only a couple of years I reply in that amount of time I can make over $150,000 and at my age would never be able to make that sum up. Good luck!
PP makes some excellent points and offered excellent advice.There is no escaping 12 hours shifts in the acute care environment - at least for the foreseeable future. And since the only way to move into the "more interesting" jobs is with clinical experience, you'd be miserable for quite a while with no guarantee of a light at the end of the tunnel.If you are seeking an avenue for self fulfillment through 'helping' others, maybe you should explore volunteer opportunities in your community rather than making such a drastic change. Another thought - have you considered Medical Social Work?
