Introducing High School Students to Field of NursingRating: (votes: 0) Nursing is one of the fields of study and careers we are focusing on, and I was hoping to seek insight and thoughts for real nurses: -How would you explain what being a nurse is like to a high school student? -Can you think of any 5 to 10 minute simulations that would put them in the mindset of a nurse, to better understand what nursing is about? -What are the pros, cons of nursing, in your experience? -Any other thoughts are appreciated! Thanks in advance!! Anetta from Ontrak Education I know they are incredibly cliche, but I know a lot of nursing programs show the Johnson & Johnson nurse videos. They are meant to pull on the heartstrings, but I think they did a good job of catching the good side of nursing. Here is the one I was shown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jSHi...ure=plpp_videoAnd here is the list of all the videos they have made:http://www.youtube.com/view_play_lis...6ABCBE3966759AGood luck! Comment: I agree with PP - love the videos!!!It's important to make sure that HS students are aware that Nursing is a science-based career, and they need to max their opportunities for science and math prep courses. Somehow, the intensity of coursework needed to become a nurse usually comes as a shock to people who have only cued in to the emotional appeal of our profession. HS grads need to be well prepared to tackle college-level coursework rather than spend money and time on remedial (non credit) courses needed to fill in gaps that should have been taken care of in HS.Make sure that your students are also informed of the very competitive nature of health care education programs. There is a permanent record - known as GPA - and majoring in 'party' for a semester or two will do irreparable harm to this very important metric.Comment: Thank you both so much! Great advice - I really appreciate it.
