High contact sports and nursing?Rating: (votes: 0) I was wondering what you all thought about the legal and/or ethical issues that may arise by being a part of a high contact sport when you are a nurse. If there is a high likelyhood that participants of the sport will be injured (possibly by you), how would you approach this? I am interested in joining a sport after I finish nursing school and have a life again, but I feel like as a nurse I would be limited in what would be acceptable. Thanks for your thoughts! I don't consider this an ethical or legal dilemma. Everyone is there voluntarily because they find it fun. You aren't a nurse 24/7. You can be a nurse at work and have fun too. Enjoy Comment:

I don't understand the problem. What does being involved in sports have to do with your career as a nurse? Who is is you think is going to allow, or disallow, your choice of extracurricular activities?Confused.

Legal and ethical issues? What kind of sport are we talking about here? Seriously, though, what you do on your own time (disclaimer: as long as you are not participating in some illegal activity) is really your business and no one else's. You are a nurse when you are at work and you are free to be whatever you want to be when you are not at work.

If you were a waitress and one of your friends fell over injured, you'd help them...right? So, as a nurse, if you are playing a sport and one of your teamates is injured...help them....and call 911 if needed.

This is an odd question hey I'm game. For high contact sport i box yeap my wife looks at me and says hun your not 20 anymore I know but boxing i have always done and now I'm pushing 50 its a man thing LOL. I joke with her and say remember when i use to get in to fights in school and things like that well now i can punch people legally and not get tossed in to jail ( kidding) I also hold a black belt in Aikido. And i think on this site is a few mix arts type people. If your worried about getting hurt and having to take time off of work to heal then i would rethink your choice of sport. If you come in to work all banged up and blacken tell your story with pride and when they ask you why say ( Guys Dig It ) But i don't see an issue with it. These are my thoughts use them as you wish

Your responses are reassuring. I guess I am concerned since the sport I am considering is so unconventional, girls roller derby. My husband is an MMA fighter (not a nurse), but I have heard of nurses doing that. I know as a nurse we are to behave in a moral manner. As a nurse, is it moral to crash into someone for sport? Even if you aren't intending harm, but just to win the game. I guess I am just so focused on helping people heal, it seems counterintuitive. I just wanted to get your thoughts.

I think Roller Derby would be so cool. As a nurse, I would have no problem with it.

I did, am, and will continue to participate in extreme gravity sports.
