Private Nursing

I recntly read an article online from a newspasper in Kansas about patients hiring their own private nurse to care for them while in the hospital. Has anyone had experience with this? Supposedly this is becoming popular becaues of overworked hospital nurses due to the shortage. As a critical care nurse I know I frequently wish I had an extra hand to do the kind of nurseing I became a nurse to do. I thought it might be interesting to be able to give that level of care to a critical patient and might involve some traveling as I can't imagine there would be that much call for it in one city.
What Carole said and more. Our facility used to let the private duty nurses give the meds except IVs and chart. However when thngs go more technology oriented-computer charting and Pyxis use, they no longer allowed the private nurses to do these. That plus the fact that insurance didn't pay for nurses at all pretty much ended the practice. We did have private agancy "sitters" that families would hire to stay with confused patients. And we had contracts with agencies for sitters for suicidal patients until they could be transferred to the psych facility. The hospital footed the bill for these type sitters, but not for the confused patient type.P
