New grad in subacute nursing home/job offersRating: (votes: 0) I am a recent new grad and no hospitals in NJ seem to be hiring new grads, so I decided to apply for some nursing homes and VNA's I was just offered two jobs today One is a nursing home and I will be on the subacute and longterm care they are starting me at 30.00 and hire full time. for subacute its 20:1 resident/nurse ratio and for longterm its 30:1 that makes me extremeley nervous also that I only have 2/3 weeks orientation I was also offered another nursing home job but strictly in sub acute with the ratio of 15:1 ( a little better) but only 28.00 dollars and hour this job is also about 20-30 minutes farther away from my house but it has a nicer facility and 3/4 week orientation. Ive been making a pro an con list and thinking all day about this. I dont care about the money I just want the place that will offer me the best experience to learn the best and better my future nursing career. I also have another interview for home care ( VNA) this friday, specialty program for new grad RN's its 6 week orientation and slowly gradually get patients one by one at your own pace. Home care is not something I really want to do, but again I want the best for my future and gain the best nursing skills. ANY HELP OR ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT THANK YOU ![]() Personally I would sacrifice $2 per hour and lose 15 patients with the better ratios and longer orientation. As long as you don't mind the drive (and some folks like a longer commute to decompress), it sure seems the preferred facility for a new grad.I wouldn't choose home health as a new grad. It's always preferable to have some years of experience upon which to draw while practicing alone in a home setting. |
