Feel stuck in medsurg

With all the talk of how hard it is for new grads to find jobs... I feel like new grads have an easier time getting jobs than experienced nurses. I only have 2 years of med surg exp and I have been told that I must do imc before icu.. Yet new grads get hired into icu. I also wanted picu, but was told I must do pedi medsurg since I have only done adult med surg. Yet new grads get hired in picu. I am tired of working med surg nights and watching new grads get hired onto icu days. While I am told med surg nurses need to transition to imc. What can I do to work in picu? Relocate? And why is it that experience counts for nothing these days!!???
I spoke with a recruiter at my facility and one at a different one
Comment:
Try another facility then. That's what I did . I'm going from medsurg to a Medical floor/stepdown. I want to do PACU in the future .
Comment:
Maybe you could shadow in ICU or PICU a few times and meet the managers. Possible to get an interview that way.
Comment:
I would also join linked in and start networking, sometimes it's about who you know
Comment:
I'm sorry but New Grads have a much tougher time getting hired than experienced nurses. In my area new grads can only apply for residencies or grad nurse positions (few positions) and i live in one of the largest metro area in the country.
